About The Arabic drum (Derbakeh, Tabla, Durbakeh, Doumbek, etc.)
Not only does the Arabic tabla (drum) have many names but it also has many variations. In general the Arabic tabla (not to be confused with the Indian tabla) has a goblet shape, is open on one end & closed on the other. The drummer uses both hands to play on the closed side (head) of the drum.
Common types of drums heads:
Synthetic: consistent sound, easy to maintain. Usually come in a clear blue or mat white surface.
Natural: Sound quality varies with weather. For example, flat sounding in humid weather and after long playing due to moisture from hands.
Fishskin: Best & sharpest sound. Difficult to find in North America. Not recommended for beginners.
The Arabic drum comes in many different sizes & can be made of anything from cast aluminium to fukhar (clay). Every drummer has his/her own preference when it comes to the "perfect drum." Nevertheless, here are a few things to consider when buying a new drum:
1. Your budget: A good sounding drum can cost anywhere between $70 (CND) to over $500 (CND)
2. Size of drum: I recommend a head diameter (playing area) of 8.5 inches. Length of drum is also important. You should be able to comfortably rest you elbow on the shaft of the drum. Common drum length is 15 inches. Common drum sizes (WxL in inches): 8.5X15, 8.5X18, 8X14, 8X15, 10X18
3. Look and feel: Polished and/or embossed copper, cast aluminium inlay, vinyl cover, engraved, painted, etc.
4. Sound: Tuneable drum recommended unless you're buying a high-end drum from a trusted source.
